Smart FTP tutorial

FTP is a program that you need in order to edit your site if you are being hosted by someone with a domain or if you have a domain with paid hosting

TO DOWNLOAD: First you'll need to make sure that you have two programs: Smart FTP and Notepad.

TO LOGIN: Once installed, open up Smart FTP. On one of the top toolbars, it says yourserver.com. Replace that with your or your host's domain name. Where it says Login, type in your username. If you own a domain name, your username should be the same as what you use to login to your cpanel. If your domain name is google.com, then your username would be usernametologintocpanel@google.com. If you are being hosted by someone (ex: google.com) andyou want your URL to be http://sparkleprincess.google.com, then your username would be sparkleprincess@google.com. After that, type in your password where indicated. Once that is done, click on FTP on the top toolbar and then click on Connect.

TO UPLOAD YOUR SITE: Now it is time to use Notepad (Internet's HTML Editor). Copy and paste all of your pages unto a Notepad file. Each page with each Notepad file. Make sure that each of your notepad files end with .html (ex: index.html, menu.html, doll.html). Place them all into a folder for more organization. In the folder, place all of your images there too. Adjust your Smart FTP window and your folder window so that you can view both at the same time. Select-All your files in the folder, and then click & drag them to your FTP window.

TO EDIT YOUR SITE: Right-click on the file you want to edit and then click on Edit. The file will open so you can edit. Once your are done, save and close it. A window will pop up called Remote Edit. Make sure that under Action it says Automatically upload file on change. For the first few times, click on upload to make sure it works and then click Close. Later on when your done editting your file/page, you would just have to click on close. For those who own a domain, you must place all of your files/pages in the folder called public_html
