1 John 5:9-13 (New Living Translation)

Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true. Those who don't believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what God has testified about his Son.
And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God's Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

This is the definition of Eternal Life:

John 17:3: And this is the way to have eternal life ó to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

  • Definition of eternal life.
  • Eternal life has already begun for those who believe in Christ.

Evidence that we have eternal life:

    1) OBEDIENCE : Righteousness, keeping God's commandments.

  • 1 John 2:3-6: And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey Godís word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

    2) HOLY SPIRIT: Submit to the The Holy Spirit in our lives.

  • 1 John 3:24: Those who obey God's commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us.
  • 1 John 4:13: And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.

    3) LOVE: Increase in love for others.

  • 1 John 3:10: So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.
  • 1 John 3:14: If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.
  • 1 John 3:18: Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
  • 1 John 4:7: Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.

    4) GOD'S PROMISE: The Promise we have been given.

  • 1 John 5:9-13: (written above)

We must continue to strive towards these four things: Obedience to God, Submitting our lives to the Holy Spirit, continuing to show brotherly love to others, and believing in God's word and promise. These things aren't necessarily easy, but it'll get easier as we continue to grow in Christ and we will see these by-products working in our lives and we will see how much we need Him in our lives.

    Assurance of Eternal Life:

  • In Some Other Religions: They do not provide assurance of eternal life. They believe if they do enough good, then hopefully they'll have eternal life.
  • Christianity: We are given assurance, and for us, it has already begun.

How does having assurance of having eternal life affect the way we live here on earth?:

  • Confidence of having eternal life.
  • Gratitude to God and Jesus for their sacrifice on the cross.
  • Peace.
  • When we share the Gospel, we can give the same Confidence to others.
